Haymarket Publishing is moving all its production to digital CTP as soon as possible, as part of the supply-chain overhaul instigated by production director Chris King.
The firm, which publishes PrintWeek, has appointed Meurig Evans as group pre-press manager to oversee the switch to digital. He is currently a group production manager for titles including Autosport, Stuff and What Hi- Fi?.
Evans' first task will be to oversee the transfer of titles to repro houses on its consolidated supplier list, which includes Graphics Group, Icon Graphics, Colour System and F1 Colour.
"What we want to see alongside savings is maintained or improved quality and service," he said.
He is investigating digital file transfer and remote proofing to cut transmission costs. "One thing that is crazy is the figure we spend on couriers," he said. "That will be reduced
dramatically."
After that he will earmark which titles can immediately eliminate film before setting a timetable for going CTP, which will start with business titles.
Among the first magazines to go CTP is Marketing, which will go completely digital, including CTP, in January. It will begin running a dual PDF and film workflow from next week's 21 November issue.
Printer ET Heron is currently installing an Agfa Galileo violet diode platesetter.
Haymarket will also take Revolution CTP, which begins next month with TPL and Icon (PrintWeek, 26 May).
