Harmsworth confirms Plymouth closure

Newspaper printer Harmsworth Printing has confirmed it will shut down its Plymouth print facility.

Around 95 employees will be made redundant by 28 February, with a skeleton staff working on until mid-April to decommission the press.

Newspapers previously printed at the Plymouth facility, which include the Exeter Express & Echo, will be moved to other Harmsworth sites, most likely its newest plant at Didcot.

The closure follows that of Grimsby in January last year, Leicester in March and Bristol in June, taking the total of jobs lost in the past 18 months across Harmsworth to nearly 400.

A spokesman for the company, which still has sites at Didcot, east London, Stoke and Derby, said it had no plans to close any other facilities at this time.

Harmsworth managing director John Bird said: "The company would like to thank the staff for the way they have conducted themselves during this most difficult time, which reflects the commitment they have always shown."
