Harlequin has launched a new version of Jaws PDF Creator and signed a deal with Motorola to produce embedded versions of Harlequin RIPs.


Version 2.0 of Jaws PDF Creator, which is the only alternative to Adobes Acrobat Distiller for creating PDF files, adds support for PDF 1.3.


At 82 ($120), PDF Creator costs much less than Acrobat Distiller and is also offered at discounted rates for multiple licences.


The deal with Motorola is for an embedded controller based on the Jaws Post-Script Level III RIP that can be used to drive mid- to high-end digital printers and large-format printers.


It supports PostScript and PDF including native ripping of PDF without converting to PostScript.


This is a clear indication that Harlequin is driving its strategy to increase its share of the market by embedding its technology, said Global Graphics Printing Software Division chief operations officer Jim Freidah.


Parent company Global Graphics has finished the year 2000 with a 52% increase in sales. Total sales were 59.3m (E93.3m) with a pre-tax loss of 1.75m (1.46m loss in 1999).


In the fourth quarter, it produced a pre-tax profit of 1.92m compared to a loss of 2.3m in 1999. Sales for the quarter were up 27% to 16.9m.


In the fourth quarter the hardware division started shipping the CTP1 plate processor for Kodak Poly-chrome Graphics as well as the first beta units of the ICG Cirrus2 B3 platesetter.


The hardware division is being integrated, which will result in cost savings, manpower reductions and efficiency improvements, said chairman and chief executive Johan Volkaerts.
