Getting ahead of the inkjet crowd

Jo Francis tracks down the solutions to your technical troubles

Q I’m really interested in the new Domino inkjet label press that the company is launching at Ipex. Can you please supply contact details?
Paul Singleton, Square Graphics

A You’re quick off the mark, Paul! By all means contact Domino about this nifty new machine – Domino’s first press – but be aware that it’s not officially available until May, so they aren’t actually selling it just yet – although I’m sure a warm welcome awaits any potential punters. The firm’s website is www.domino-printing.com, and you can contact the head office in Cambridge via 01954 782551. The best person to speak to is Stephen Hancock.

Q We are a UK manufacturer of patented webbing devices that web up newspaper and commercial web presses. We’re already selling here and in the US, but we’re looking for agents elsewhere. I wondered if you might have a list of sundry suppliers to newspapers in Europe?
Arthur Crouch, JR Press Supplies, Salisbury

A I’m afraid I don’t have a convenient list of that ilk to hand, and I understand you have already explored channels such as the Ifra exhibitor list. On a similar note, I remember at Drupa in 2008 they had a ‘Drupa matchmaker and cooperation forum’, described thus: Do you have any specific requests to the exhibitors of Drupa 2008? Do you want to provide cooperation offers to the exhibitors? Are you looking for a product that meets your special demands? Do you expect extraordinary performance or auxiliary functions?. Basically you can contact exhibitors with a query or cooperation offer. The Drupa website (www.drupa.com) contains information and the exhibitor database etc from the last event, along with a handy countdown clock that informs me that it’s a mere 800 or so days until the next one. Shriek! Anyway, the link to the cooperation bit from 2008 still appears to be live. Here’s a shortcut to it: http://bit.ly/dh9fPs.
Meanwhile, I’ve also learned that Ipex, just three months away now, is planning to launch something similar by the end of February, in the shape of Ipex Connect, an online agent/distributor matchmaking service. This is specific to Ipex exhibitors in that it has been designed to allow agents and distributors to target those exhibitors who have made it known they want to expand their business to other parts of the world. So it’s worth keeping tabs on that. If anyone is aware of any better alternative sources of contacts that would be of use, please get in touch.
