Gateshead Metropolitan Council buys new book production line

Gateshead Metropolitan Council (GMC) has purchased a new Horizon book production line.

The 4,500 books per hour line centres on a VAC-Turbo Power Collator, integrated with a JDF-ready SPF/FC-200A book production unit. The machine has a 200 programme job memory for instant recall and job set-up, and external waste removal.

According to print unit manager Christine Mundy, the line, supplied by Graphic Arts Equipment (GAE), is still proving a learning curve.

She said: “It is running as well as we expected. It is early days and we are still learning its capabilities. There is one size, A6, that the previous machine did not do, so that is something we can do in-house now, rather than sending out to a trade finisher.”

The council’s print unit produces both litho and digital print for all areas of GMC’s operation, including agendas, information leaflets,  booklets and brochures.

Mundy added: “Our previous machine was coming to the end of its lease and, when it went out to tender, we talked to a number of suppliers. Our staff are still training but, so far, GAE’s support desk has provided all the help we have needed.”
