The Suffolk-based litho and digital printer commenced the programme in October 2016, when it installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster CX 102, a Screen platesetter and an upgraded Tharstern CRM system in response to a resurgence in the B1 market.
While the Muller replaces a “lesser” machine from the same brand, according to managing director Neil Stones, the Duplo is a new installation expanding the company’s machine portfolio and configured with squareback ability. A machine from a different manufacturer was initially considered but a number of Fuller Davies’ 28 staff have previously worked on Duplo machines.
“We are now at the end of our investment programme, though we are likely to consider further additions and expenditure in the middle of next year,” said Stones.
“It will depend what happens in the coming months. Print is a tough environment to invest in at the moment, so we are proud to be doing well in such a challenging market. Our team appreciates seeing money spent well on the company.”
Installed between 3 and 6 November, both machines are now up and running and operating on jobs including brochures, small books, and other saddle-stitched items. According to Stones, the company is already showing a 20% increase in productivity with the squareback capabilities also presenting new job opportunities.
The Muller can take up to A3 and the Duplo runs A4 landscape, which Stones said is “very important” for customers. He said they would be scouting out new markets in the near future.
He added: “You have to keep topping up your customer base because it is a bit like a leaky bucket – there will always be customers dropping off and new ones coming in.
“We are always expanding and keep prospecting for new customers. We tend to focus on a single sector for expansion but are happy to take on jobs from all sectors.”
Operating from a 1,600sqm premises in Ipswich, the company has sales of more than £3.5m.
