Fort Dunlop move will lead to 92 job cuts

Trinity Mirror is to make nearly half of the staff from its Coventry and Birmingham sites redundant when operations are merged into its new Fort Dunlop site.

It has placed the new plant's staffing levels at 101 after assessment, but 193 currently work at the Coventry and Birmingham sites.

Regional managing director Alistair Nee said: "The investment is essential for ensuring the long-term success of our business."

The firm hoped that all of the job losses would be through selective voluntary redundancy. The new staffing structure will be completed by summer 2004, when the press hall is scheduled to be operational.

The £60m plant, which will consist of 12 Goss Colorliner 70 four-high towers, is part of Trinity Mirror's £90m regional investment.

GPMU Birmingham and West Midlands branch secretary Tom Lowe was aware of the proposals.

-Trinity Mirror claims that its pension fund members should not be concerned by reports that there is a deficit of over £100m.
