The Indigo was installed last week in the premises that Elanders relocated to in July 2015 from a smaller site in Cumbernauld, Glasgow.
The digital press joins a Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 74, which will have its workload reduced as Elanders migrates more jobs from litho to digital.
Speaking to PrintWeek at the Packaging Innovations 2016 trade show at London’s Olympia, Elanders business development director Bryan Crennell said: “Trading is going well and we are growing and always feel we have a need for growing capacity in the business.
“I like the quality and the flexibility of the machine. It prints on demand with personalised production and has a faster workflow. It was bought originally with the main aim to give us extra capacity.”
The 6800 prints at a maximum speed of 40m/min and takes a maximum paper width of 340mm. It has four colours as standard, with options for six and seven colours, the additional colours being orange, violet and green. It prints at resolutions of up to 2,438dpi in High Definition Imaging (HDI).
The Bellshill site is 1,600sqm, which is four times the size of the previous site. The company initially invested £2m in the site, including the kit, which now houses the two Indigos and the Speedmaster plus a number of pieces of finishing kit, including die-cutters and embossing machinery.
The North Tyneside-headquartered UK arm of the global print and packaging solutions company has a vision to double its capacity by 2020.
In July, it completed the acquisition of German supply chain management company LGI Logistics Group International, which it referred to at the time as “one of the leading players in industrial contract logistics in Germany”.
Crennell said this added supply chain logistics to the company to complement its core business.
The business also has a third site, a distribution fullfillment centre, in Stirchley, West Midlands.
Elanders UK is part of the Elanders Group, which has operations in 36 locations worldwide. The UK arm employs 210 staff and the group employs around 7,500 globally.
At Drupa, Elanders Group signed a deal for five HP Indigos, to be installed at sites in Sweden and Germany.
