At the end of last year, the Denby, Derbyshire-based display graphics specialist took onboard a new Inca Onset X2 digital printer from Fujifilm and a Dyss X9-1630C combo-head digital cutter from AG/CAD to add muscle to its operation.

With an Onset X1 printer and aging Kongsberg cutter already onsite, the new additions grew and enhanced what Derwent could offer its clients, and so a new website is now being developed with the new offering in mind.

Commercial director Paul White said: “With the introduction of the Onset X2, we have probably got among the best print quality on offer in the country. This Inca machine is the finest digital print you can get and it both doubles our capacity and speeds up our turnaround times.

“While our X1 will focus more on plastic applications, the X2 will be working on corrugated specifically, which will also work well alongside the Dyss cutter.

“Because of the introduction of the Inca and the Dyss, we have spent the new year adjusting to our increased capacity and so we knew the site would need to be redeveloped in line with that.”

Installed at Derwent with a robotic arm, the Onset X2 is capable of printing up to 725sqm/hr and 145 beds/hr, can handle substrates up to 3.2x1.6m in size and up to 50mm thick and can be used to produce high-quality, fast-turnaround retail graphics.

With its combo-head, the Dyss X9-1630 can run a variety of cuts including heavy duty cutting, creasing, v-cutting, kiss-cutting and routing and accommodate a stock of boards up to 3.2x1.6m, as well as up to 70 sheets of EB flute.

For many jobs at Derwent, which will include production runs of 500-3,000 as well as prototyping and shorter runs, the X9 eliminated the need for cutting formes.

Operating on 2,600sqm floorspace, Derwent Display employs 30 full-time members of staff and a team of part-time workers.
