Cuts proposed at Benhamgoodheadprint

Benhamgoodheadprint has entered into a 30-day consultation period with the GPMU over proposed press room redundancies at its Bicester plant.

GPMU Home Counties West branch secretary Tony Kingston said the company was proposing to mothball one of its web presses, which would involve several redundancies.

"It’s a distinct possibility if we cannot find any alternatives, and we hope they will be on a voluntary basis," said Kingston.

Kingston said the proposal to stop production on a machine had been taken by the company due to the current levels of overcapacity in the web industry.

The company currently runs seven presses: a Heidelberg heatset 48pp web press, two Komori System 16pp webs, a Komori System 38 32pp press, a Goss Universal 70, a MAN Uniset and an Albert heatset/coldset.

Benhamgoodheadprint was formed after the Goodhead Group merged the web operations of Benhams in Colchester and Goodhead Print in Bicester last year (PrintWeek, 2 November 2001).
