Courtney left the Cardiff-based business in order to join the Wace Group in 1995 and subsequently Bezier where he was a key driver during two MBOs at the company. He joined the board in 2000 on gaining the role of managing director at its Bristol site.

He began his new role at Gardners at the beginning of this month.

Gardners managing director Richard Gardner said: "I was originally very disappointed to lose Richard at a time when our business was growing very rapidly.

"His return now is very opportune as he brings back a wealth of experience that will add great strength to our team and help continue to develop new markets and applications."

Gardners is a £11m-turnover company that employs 90 staff.
