The machine, part of Konica Minolta’s new C1100 series, was installed at the Glasgow-based firm’s premises last month.

“Very few digital printers that I’d seen were able to print journals and covers to the standard that we needed. I went to Ipex and happened to see Konica Minolta, who demonstrated the C1085 to me,” said managing director Stephen Docherty.

“It printed to perfection, so we had a three-week trial with the machine and it hasn’t stopped since. It’s a remarkable printer. I’m really pleased with it.”

The firm also looked at Ricoh and Canon alternatives but found the C1085 the best fit for its requirements.

“We have always had a strong commitment to process and product quality and also investing in the future of our business so it was an easy decision for us to purchase the C1085. We were specifically impressed with the colour consistency, uptime and performance that it offered us,” said Docherty.

“This machine is running full shifts and we’re hopefully looking to invest in another in the near future.”

The bizhub C1085, which prints at up to 85ppm, was recently launched in Manchester as part of Konica Minolta’s 'Enable Your Business' roadshow.

“We are delighted to announce the first installation of the C1085 with Bell & Bain and we will continue to support it with the implementation to help enable a clear return on investment,” said Konica Minolta market development manager Mark Hinder.

Bell & Bain, which was founded in 1831, specialises in the printing and binding of business, educational, financial, medical, scientific and religious books and journals.

Last month the firm became the first UK printer to install a Muller Martini Diamant MC case binding line. It has also recently invested in a Horauf casemaker and a Technotrans bulk ink pumping system for its eight-colour KBA Rapida 142 long perfector.

The company, which has 92 staff, is planning to grow its turnover from £10m last year to £11m or £12m this year.
