Barclays refutes supplier review claims

Barclays has refuted claims that it has already decided to place its 35m print budget with just five print companies, following last week's revelation that it is reviewing its marketing print suppliers from a shortlist of 19.

Barclays spokesman George Hulbert said: "This is entirely premature and utterly untrue."

One industry source said he had been told by the bank that it didn?t want to put work worth more than 15% of turnover with any one company.

Another firm, Linney Print, which was among the nine not invited to the review, did £230,000 worth of work for Barclays last year.

Managing director Miles Linney said: "They've had to move quickly and the list may seem brutal. It's a shame we weren?t considered and it's a bigger shame that Barclays? team never visited the suppliers."

Aside from the selected suppliers, which will be announced at the end of August, existing companies that offer a niche service and are prepared to work on an ad hoc basis will still be used by the bank.
