Augustus ends row with ex-MD

Augustus Martin has settled its dispute with former managing director Michael Withington just two weeks before his unfair dismissal case was due to reconvene for a 15-day substantive hearing.

The East London screen and digital printer has agreed to pay Withington £68,296 comprising loss of earnings, statutory redundancy payment and pay in lieu of notice.

At a preliminary hearing last December/January, Augustus Martin director Barrie Dix had accused an adviser to Withington of demanding a £1.1m payment (PrintWeek, 20 December 2001).

But Withington retorted by claiming that Dix and fellow director Lascelle Barrow had concocted a "fabricated story".

After Withington was made redundant in May 2000, Dix and Barrow proposed that they would become joint managing directors and transfer Withington to another senior position, a move he declined to make.
