Paper and board merchant Antalis has cut carbon emissions by 9% from its 2021 baseline in an update on its progress towards environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals.

Antalis’ report, which covers the full year 2023, shows the firm focussing strongly on internationally recognised accreditations as a starting point for its goals.

This focus is clearest in its European forestry operations, which are 88% FSC certified, and 85% PEFC certified, and in its warehouses, 57.2% of which have an ISO 14001 and/or ISO 50001 accreditation rate for environmental performance and energy use, respectively, against a goal of 65% for 2026.

Antalis has managed to cut its greenhouse gas emissions to 14,450 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in scopes one and two, with 7kg of CO2 emitted for every €1,000 in revenue. Overall, the company’s efforts – which include generating its own heat and boosting efficiency, have helped cut scope one and two emissions by 9% since 2021.

The firm faces plenty of further action, however, with distribution a major challenge.

The report said: “In the majority of countries the distribution fleet  is managed by third party logistic partners and remains the major source of emissions across the Antalis Group. We are currently working towards addressing these results in order to develop a strategy aimed at further reducing our carbon footprint.”

Hervé Poncin, CEO of Antalis Group, said: “More than ever, sustainability is a long-term performance driver for the Antalis Group and our shareholder KPP, our employees, customers and our business partners.

“It allows us  to translate our responsible identity into operational initiatives, processes and actions. We have a key role to play in the move towards a more sustainable economy and society.”

Health and Safety was another significant area of focus for the firm, which aims to reduce its incident rate to zero. This year, its rate was 3.06 – calculated by the number of accidents per thousand full-time employees – a 0.29 point increase from 2022, but still significantly down from 2018’s 10.59.

The firm’s ISO 45001 (health and safety) accreditation rate is now at 52.3%, up 13.3% on 2023 – exceeding the company’s goal of 50% by 2026.

Vicky Weatherington, sales manager for creative papers at Antalis, said: “Hervé Poncin, CEO of Antalis Group, said: “More than ever, sustainability is a long-term performance driver for the Antalis Group and our shareholder KPP, our employees, customers and our business partners.

Separately, Antalis has unveiled a new finish and swatch tool for its fine stationery brand, Conqueror, which was re-launched in 2023.

In August, Conqueror will reintroduce its “most luxurious” finish, Connoisseur 100% Cotton, available in 300 and 600gsm.

Accompanying its release is a new swatch tool, which includes a black wrapper, embossed folder, and printed cards on Conqueror’s six shades of white and cream, as well as showcasing print effects like CMYK offset, embossing, screen printing, transparent foil, and bitmap hot foil.
