AIT offers bargain in best of two kits

Applied Image Technology has adapted a Shiraz RIP and bundled it with a low-cost large-format printer to make one of the cheapest flatbed UV ink-jet printer packages available in the UK.

The kit, available for just under 80,000 is targeted at signmakers and display graphics companies and is built around the Czech-built Octopus X4 combination flatbed and roll-to-roll printer.

"We looked at flatbeds with UV curable inks and thought the Octopus was good value for money," said AIT managing director Roger Ward. "Comparable machines go for six figures."

Ward said the main selling points of the kit, including quality, high output speed and an "extremely professional RIP solution", stood out against rival flatbeds such as Zund.

The Octopus X4 prints up to 2,040mm wide and offers 360x360dpi four-colour work at up to 45m2 per hour on materials as thick as 50mm.

It uses a standard four-colour set that is cured by twin air-cooled UV lamps mounted on the Xaar printhead carriage.

The package includes a PC, Mac or Linux server and start-up inks and a portfolio of media profiles.

"The Octopus offers print-for-pay large-format display producers the most affordable, cost-effective route into UV-cured solvent flatbed printing," claimed Ward.
