Q&A: Mark Willis, managing director, KMS Litho

Tree surgery’s loss was print’s gain, and KMS owner Willis is poised to notch up 30 years in printing after following his father into the trade. The 46-year-old father of three has developed a penchant for fancy titanium road bikes having decided he is now “too old to carry on playing football”.

What is your nickname? Charlie or Mr Perfect

Why did you get into printing? The chance of an apprenticeship was offered at the print company my dad was working for in Cirencester. He seemed to enjoy his work so I thought I would give it a go

What would be your dream job? If someone had asked me where I wanted to be 20 or so years ago then I am pretty much there so I guess I already have my dream job. The only alternative that I have thought of previously is a tree surgeon

Who would play you in a movie about your life? Ryan Gosling’s a good-looking chap

What is your dream bit of kit? My Spin titanium road bike

What would you most like to print? Anything with double-digit net profit margins and sensible timescales

What is your favourite TV show? Made in Chelsea, I love the ridiculous nature of it, so far removed from the real world

Who or what do you hate the most? Life’s too short for hatred

Who do you admire most in print? Gilbert Nurden, one of the former owners of Avonprint in Cirencester who gave me my chance in print and believed in me

What is your favourite saying? ‘Yes, we can help you with that, it’s no trouble’

What is the strangest job you’ve had? Engineered, printed and made up 50 fully working Paddington Bear suitcases, complete with fitted-out insides and leather carry handles!

What is your greatest ambition? To be able to retire healthy and wealthy enough to travel the world

What’s your greatest fear? Not meeting tomorrow’s deadlines, oh… and spiders

Who or what makes you laugh? Currently, the humour of Karl Pilkington, but the great British sense of humour in general – I do not wish to offend but cant stand American humour, they just cannot get it right

What piece of kit would you like to see invented? A front- and side-lay system for registration would be good on entry-level digital print kit

What’s your worst fashion disaster? My wife would say my collection of Lycra cycling gear, the kids would say my dad dancing is both unfashionable and embarrassing!

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off? Hopefully it’s still to come

How would you like to be remembered? An all-round good guy who always gave 110%

Life is…?  Too short, stop moaning and enjoy it

What were your childhood obsessions? Football, cheese and fudge
