Q&A: Helen Phillips Head of customer service, RNB Group

Helen is 30 years old and has worked in print for 10 years, after starting work in the industry while she finished her degree.

Outside of the day job she confesses to being “an obsessive gym goer”, which involves some early starts. “My day starts with an hour’s training session every day at 6am… which makes up for my other hobby of fine dining and fine wine!”

What is your nickname?

Hells Bells

Why did you get into printing?

I didn’t have the best time at university so when I was offered some work experience at a print management company, I never wanted to leave. I finished my English degree while working there part-time and never looked back!

What would be your dream job?

I always wanted to be the editor of Vogue and live in New York

What would you most like to print?

Probably a nice glossy, not Vogue anymore though... something with stunning food photography

What is your favourite film?

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin

What is your favourite TV programme?

Masterchef

Sweet or savoury?

Definitely both – I always have to have sweet immediately after savoury!

Who or what do you hate the most?

When people say something can’t possibly be done and then put it on your desk a couple of hours later

Who do you admire most in the industry?

An old colleague, Tom Priestley, head of Liaison Print Management, Intermarketing Agency

What is your favourite saying?

Try anything twice!

What is your favourite book?

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin by Louis de Bernières

What is your greatest luxury in life?

My gym membership – it costs me a fortune, but it’s my therapy

What is the strangest job you’ve ever done?

Painting hundreds of wooden bees with slightly thicker stripes than they’d arrived with – they looked more like wasps!

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?

My six best friends. We’ve known each other since we were 11 and make a pretty good team. I reckon we’d be able to work our way out of the situation. And if we couldn’t we’d have a good laugh trying!

What’s your greatest fear?

Being boring

Which superpower would you like?

I’d like to be able to survive on less sleep – there’s not enough hours in the day when you need your seven hours!

What is the worst kind of print?

I can’t stand fragrance burst. It’s a clever idea but it almost always smells awful

How would you like to be remembered?

As always being happy and positive
