Q&A: Heather O’Connell Consultant and trainer, Bluebird Consulting

Heather – or ‘Aitch’ as she was known by her school friends – has been working in the printing industry for the past 27 years, despite only joining it accidentally.

She’s a self-confessed culture vulture – “I love the arts” – and gets out to the theatre or cinema at least once a week. Other hobbies include running, although her enthusiasm fluctuates with the weather. She lives in North London with her boyfriend. 

Why did you get into printing? 

I got a job as the office junior at Marvel Comics. My boss resigned and so I was producing comics within a fortnight

What would be your dream job? 

Food, film and theatre critic

Who would play you in a movie about your life?  

I’d love to say Julia Roberts but it’s more likely to be Dawn French

What is your dream bit of kit? 

A time machine, to make those deadlines easier to meet

What would you most like to print?   

Anything produced with love, care and passion

Who do you admire most in the industry?

I can’t name just one, they are: Juliette Butler, production manager at PRH – always an inspiration, an expert and calm influence. Ali Kaye, Tanya Dunbar (managing directors at CPI) and Kate McFarlan (Strategic director at Clays) for being brilliant women in print

What is your favourite saying?

‘It’ll be fine’

What is your favourite album? 

Albums? That’s so last century. My current playlist includes: Adele, The Brand New Heavies, Jack Johnson, Lenny Kravitz and The Straight Outta Compton soundtrack

What book are you reading at the moment? 

Dictator by Robert Harris, the last in his fantastic Cicero trilogy

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with? 

My boyfriend Nick, he’s pretty handy. I would be totally useless at hunting and shelter building

What is your greatest ambition? 

To see the Northern Lights from a glass roofed igloo  

What’s your greatest fear? 

The sea

Most embarrassing moment? 

There are far too many to list here. I am a total klutz

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

A peach puff ball dress from 1986

Where would you go if you could time-travel? 

Vegas in the 50s

What is the worst kind of print? 

Anything designed to breed hate

What was the best business deal that you’ve pulled off?  

Producing 50 new books in six months from concept to delivery with absolutely no track record

How would you like to be remembered? 

As a funny, happy, kind friend
