Q&A: Freddie Kienzler, managing director, Formara Printers

We can’t quite believe it, given his fresh-faced appearance, but Freddie is set to retire next month after 43 years in the industry. He has two daughters from two marriages, and loves golf, eating in fine restaurants, travelling and lazing in the sun – so his decision to retire to Portugal seems ‘perfeito’.

What is your nickname? 

‘The Assassin’ after taking out a greenkeeper at Pinheiros Altos Golf Club with a maginificent five wood and following it up the next day by killing a duck with a scuffed iron shot at San Lorenzo

Why did you get into printing? 

Mars Confectionery and Avery Scales said I was too posh for them but Rank Xerox, as it was then, weren’t picky

What would be your dream job?

I’m happily married so I can’t say in case Gloria reads this

Who would play you in a movie about your life?

My cat who has a wonderful life and does exactly what he wants, whenever he wants to do it with not a care in the world unless the mice run out

What is your dream bit of kit?

Anything that I could run from my smartphone from the beach

What would you most like to print?

The winning lottery ticket

What is your favourite film?

It’s a toss-up between Gone with the Wind and the Star Trek series of films

Who or what do you hate the most?

People who don’t have time for others

Who do you admire most in print? 

There is no single individual but all the R&D guys who come up with the fantastic leaps forward in the technology that we now use

What is your favourite saying?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

What is your greatest luxury?

My family

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with?

Leonardo da Vinci – one of history’s greatest inventors

What’s your greatest ambition?

I have been very lucky and achieved the important things that I wanted to do in my life so I guess it’s more of the same, please

What’s your greatest fear?

It’s not really a fear but I’m quite happy on this earth and I’d prefer not to leave it for a while yet

Who or what makes you laugh?

My granddaughter who has just had her first birthday

Which celebrity would you like to get out of here? Why?

All of them. We make far too much of ‘celebrity culture’ and it’s not healthy

Where would you like to be now?

Retired in Portugal – roll on August

What’s your worst fashion disaster?

I once bought a bright green velvet frock coat in Carnaby Street in the mid 60s – it looked awful

Who would be your favourite party guests?

Tommy Cooper, Sid James, Winston Churchill, Alexander the Great, Margaret Thatcher, Jane Fonda, Boadicea and Messalina [just to spice things up a little]

What is the worst kind of print?

Anything not produced by Formara

How would you like to be remembered?

A man of his word
