Q&A: Elena Cinquegrana, group product director, Photobox

Elena is a relative newcomer to the industry, having joined Photobox 18 months ago. Prior to that she was head of product development at McLaren Applied Technologies. She speaks five languages and is a Scrum black belt

What is your nickname?  

Close friends and family call me Ele

Why did you get into printing? 

I am an amateur photographer and I have been always fascinated by the printing processes, and the manufacturing of photo books. You see memories and emotional moments, printed on our amazing products and that is a priceless experience

What would be your dream job? 

An explorer and archaeologist

Who would play you in a movie about your life?  

Meryl Streep

What is your dream bit of kit? 

A map, a vintage Rolleiflex camera, and a good pair of walking shoes to travel and experience places and countries I have yet to visit

What would you most like to print?   

The moment in which Columbus discovered America

What is your favourite film?  

Mission (an old De Niro movie)

What is your favourite TV programme?

Who or what do you hate the most? 

I have no tolerance for disrespect, and inequality

What is your favourite phrase or saying?

“I am totally relaxed about it” …but this doesn’t mean that is the case. Helps anyway in certain challenging situation to keep composed, detached and containing my dormant Italian steamy genes

What is your favourite book? 

My old time favourite book is The Old Man and the Sea. I am a passionate reader, and I usually read more than one book at the time. The ones I am currently enjoying are: ‘Love Letter to the Earth’ by Thich Nhat Hanh; ‘Beyond the Obvious’ by Phil McKinney and ‘This is Going to Hurt’ by Adam Kay

What is your greatest luxury in life? 

Champagne and foodie restaurants

Who would you like to be stuck on a desert island with? 

Her Majesty the Queen (for her humour and all the amazing stories she could share, plus surely a fleet of planes and boats and planes to come to the rescue) and my mum (top notch cook, savvy on any wild herbs foraging, and awesomely entertaining to see the both of them chatting along under a palm tree)

What is your greatest ambition? 

To help others, to share my knowledge and make sure each and one of us has got the opportunities we deserve and aspire to achieve

What’s your greatest fear?  

To let down the people I care and love

Who or what makes you laugh?  

My Sister Michela, my niece Noemi and my best friends, the ones who know how to make me have a real good time

What piece of kit would you like to see invented? 

Augmented reality pictures of past eras, where we can interact as if we were in it real time

Where would you like to be right now?  

On a boat in Rangiroa 

What’s your worst fashion disaster? 

Well...I am Italian by birth, so I am afraid that is a code you cannot possibly break!

Which superpower would you like to have? 

Healing children’s illness and suffering, without any publicity nor superhero labelling

Madonna!

What was your childhood obsession? 

Travelling, as I couldn’t afford it and always said one day I will (and I did!)

What advice would you give to your teenage self? 

Don’t be too hard on yourself, you are on a journey, and as such you need to be open to embrace anything that comes your way, as there is not right or wrong in what you do. And to dream big is a healthy way of respecting your instincts and ambitions

How would you like to be remembered?  

As a funny, crazy, reliable individual who has inspired loads, and the best party companion no matter the age.
