The range, which presents entire novels printed on B1 or A0 sheets in designs related to the book, includes Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, Romeo and Juliet and Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland. Spineless Classics has also created a Wizard of Oz edition exclusively for John Lewis.
The final framed products retail at upwards of £120.
Victoria Litho printed the black and white posters using its KBA Rapida 162A on 170gsm Lumisilk paper. Vario Press also prints postcard versions of the collection.
Spineless Classics managing director Carl Pappenheim said the inspiration came from a friend in printing who was running some architectural drawings.
The juxtaposition of the huge sketches with such small writing for the measurements fascinated Pappenheim and he was intrigued to find out how many words would fit on a page in tiny text. So came the birth of Spineless Classics.
Pappenheim said: "We discovered all sorts of things like the fact that the number of columns makes a huge difference as to whether the book fits on the page.
"Some books will have lots of short paragraphs, and so even though you are wasting space in the gutters, more columns buys you more space. The Hound of the Baskervilles begins with lots of dialogue but at the end there is a bunch of big paragraphs of action.
"This format is unique in allowing you to notice that. It’s fun that it has revealed aspects of the book that no-one would have otherwise seen."
All prints are designed in 4pt Times New Roman sans serif font as it is familiar to the reader and easier to read at such a small size, said Pappenheim.
