Nick Alexander, group chief executive, Garnett Dickinson We are working as normal. We’ll be giving some people a day off in lieu if they’re working, the rest of it is being treated like any normal bank holiday – we work 24-7 with the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day anyway. There are better ways I can think of to spend our money, but on the bright side we have just produced 300,000 rather nice commemorative magazines, about which I am thrilled and delighted.
Chris Bowen, chief executive, Print People Group It’s a double whammy. Schedules must be met so presses will need to run at overtime rates, and because of its proximity to the Easter and May bank holidays, many people are taking an extended break, so from the print-buying perspective there is likely to be a dearth of orders placed during this period. I guess for many commercial printers, in particular the smaller ones, this will mean a slow and stressful start to May.
Mark Cornford, managing director, Integrity Print I’ve explained to our staff that I hope they enjoy the day, but have asked them to recognise the impact of this unplanned public holiday on our business – circa £60,000 in labour cost alone, not taking account of lost production. Business is tough enough as it is, without us losing £60,000 in order to celebrate this royal occasion. While I’m delighted for the happy couple, as a private business owner, I’m unconvinced that this event will provide a meaningful boost to the economy. Why can’t they get married on a Saturday like everyone else?
