PEFC brand 'ever more visible' following printer sign-ups

PEFC has said its brand is becoming "ever more visible" following the rise in the number of printers that are accredited to the Chain-of-Custody certification.

At its ninth AGM, PEFC UK chairman Peter Latham said during the past two years, demand for the certification had been particularly strong in the print, paper and publishing sectors.

In 2005, five years after it had been established, the company issued just 70 Chain-of-Custody certifications in the UK, but it has now issued more than 1,300 – with some 500 of those held by printers.

Latham said: "One of the outcomes of this greatly increased number of print companies becoming Chain-of-Custody certified is that more and more publishers and brand owners are now choosing to use the PEFC logo on their publications as an assurance of responsible paper sourcing.

"In the coming year, we aim to drive traffic to the website to encourage corporate print buyers to choose certified papers for their publications and give preference to certified printers."

PEFC UK has the second highest number of Chain-of-Custody certificates within the international organisation, with 20% of the global total.

In PrintWeek's 2010 Environmental Survey, some 50% of printers questioned had FSC certification, while 32% held PEFC certification.

Latham said the organisation, which earlier this year welcomed Alun Watkins as its new national secretary, recognised it still had a challenging job ahead to raise awareness of PEFC amongst the print buying community.
