The device, which combines Océ's new JetStream 5500 full-colour inkjet press with Manroland Web System's FoldLine VPF 211 variable pin folder, has the flexibility to produce a range of newspaper formats as well as books and magazines.
Océ's JetStream 5500 is a 762mm wide full-colour inkjet web press that can print at 600x480dpi at up to 254m/min (mpm) or 200mpm in 1,200dpi perceived quality mode.
This gives it a maximum hourly output of 30,000 B2 format sheets, 5,140 A4 images, 4,000 24pp broadsheet sections, or 8,000 24pp tabloid sections.
Manroland's Foldline VPF 211 creates broadsheet newspapers with up to 96 pages and up to 12 newspaper sections at 254mpm. It permits variability in formats, number of sections and cut-offs. Book signatures and cylinder-stitched booklets in a number of different formats can be delivered with extremely short makeready times.
"What makes this solution so unique is the ability to produce professionally finished newspapers during the night, and then during the day shift professional books, booklets and magazines, all on one system," said Sebastian Landesberger, executive vice president of Océ commercial printing.
"With over 8,000 tabloid newspapers per hour and more than 30,000 B2 format sheets per hour for book production, at a continuously high image quality, this is a game changer for the newspaper and book publishing market. Never before could we so dramatically accelerate the transition from offset printing to digital printing."
The press is powered by Océ's established Prisma workflow, coupled with its SRA MP controller, which drives variable data at the maximum 254mpm production speed across the width of the web.
Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) 2.5 support is embedded in the IPDS datastream and is ripped directly on the printer controller, eliminating any intermediate process.
