Roger Pellow (RP): India is similar to Labelexpo Asia but different from the mature Labelexpo trade shows held in Europe and America. This is because the market in India is maturing in regards to sophistication and is also growing at the rate of 10% per anum. China is three years ahead, but India is gaining ground quickly. One of the main challenges faced by the organisers in India is to find a decent exhibition space.
SK: How different is Labelexpo 2010 when compared to the previous years?
RP: Labelexpo India 2010 has far more working machinery, more international and local working presses along with live demonstrations on the show floor.
SK: Your objective in running road shows prior to the Labelexpo 2010?
RP: Running road shows before Labelexpo India got us engaged with printers across India. We got feedback at these road shows which created a positive atmosphere and helped us understand and estimate moderately what sort of show are we expecting in New Delhi.
SK: Any last moment bookings for Labelexpo India 2010?
RP: Most major companies have already booked. But bookings from the local Indian companies are still in process which is handled by our new employee Pradeep Saroha who is based in our Delhi office.
SK: How many visitor footfalls are you expecting?
RP: We are estimating 6,000–7,000 visitor footfalls at the show between the 8-11 December. The visitor's profile includes brand owners and offset printers who are looking to enter the Indian market.
SK: According to you, what are the Indian label converters aiming to achieve in 2011?
RP: Indian label converters are looking to diversify beyond pressure sensitive labels. They are now into all types of labels including shrink sleeve, wrap around and in-mould. Printers are looking to improve quality and consistency into their businesses.
SK: Which technologies should the Indian label converters look to invest in?
RP: They should be looking at spending on inspection equipment to increase the quality control and also pre-press equipment such as EskoArtwork plate making technology. There's a large move in the world and India as they will follow suit into digital printing and converting.
SK: This year you've a healthy number presentations made by key speakers. What are the highlights?
RP: Ilkka Ylipoti, senior vice president of UPM Raflatac Asia-Pacific will deliver the keynote address on 'Globalisation and opportunities on a growth market' on 8 December (Wednesday) at 14:30 on the Labelexpo stand (J20). The presentation will be hosted by label guru Michael Fairley.
SK: What according to you is the future of Labelexpo in India? Are you bullish?
RP: Labelexpo India will continue to run every two years. The next edition of the show will take place in December 2012, New Delhi.
