Howitt prints London Mayoral election booklet

A company recently acquired by Innovative Output Solutions was awarded a contract to supply booklets to more than five million people in the run up to the London Mayor elections which took place last week.

Howitt won the contract from London Elects to print, bind and enclose more than 5.9m booklets designed for the London local elections. It would not disclose how much the contract was worth.

The booklets were delivered to people across Greater London between 14–25 April and contained information on the seven mayoral candidates, London Assembly candidates, and the voting process.

Howitt business development manager Peter Hochrath said it used a Heidelberg Harris M600 for the printing, a Heidelberg ST300 for binding and a Buhrs 700 for enclosing.

He said a competitive tender was organised for the contract through Transport for London on behalf of London Elects and the Greater London Returning Officer.

"Flexibility was a key issue, since the pagination for the booklet could not be confirmed until nominations closed 28 March, with final artwork available 4 April," he said. "The first 1m copies had to be dispatched by 13 April with the balance available for posting by 23 April."
