Teguh Ganda Wijaya has hit the top spot in the RISI Power List due to his work at APP, which over the last 30 years has brought the company from a single paper mill in Indonesia to number three in the world.
He is joined by International Paper's (IP) chairman and chief executive John Faraci and Stora Enso's chief executive Jouko Karvinen, who have claimed the second and third spot respectively.
According to the list, Faraci's presence means IP has successfully plotted a new business course – the company is eyeing expansion into packaging, and plans to acquire Weyerhaeuser's containerboard, packaging and recycling unit in a $6bn (£3bn) deal expected to be completed in September.
At Stora Enso, Karvinen has had to make tough decisions by closing plants and making major changes from top to bottom. His vision for the future includes expansion into emerging markets.
Published by RISI, the list includes nominations from economists and those within the industry and includes figures from all parts of the supply chain.
