The handbook discusses the techniques and history of printed media and has been collaborated on by a group of international print scholars and professionals.
Kate Adamson, senior designer at Northumbria University, said Cocoon Silk 50 has been chosen because the university wanted a grade that was sympathetic to a wide range of full-colour art illustrations in the book.
She said: "Cocoon has the perfect feel for us, giving a high-quality product without the excessive bulk as postage costs for the finished book were a factor we also needed to take into consideration.
"The fact the product was recycled was an added bonus."
Cocoon Silk 50 is produced from 50% FSC-certified recycled fibre and 50% FSC-certified virgin fibre.
The proceedings marked the first international conference held on the subject, Printed on Paper: the Techniques, History and Conservation of Printed Media.
