Workers at a failed business in the USA could provide inspiration for Alden HenDi employees left in the lurch and seeking recompense. Some 200 employees of Chicago-based Republic Windows & Doors staged a sit-in at the company after the business abruptly folded.
Their direct action became something of a cause célèbre in the States, because it illustrated the plight of "Main Street" businesses compared with the public funds used to bail out Wall Street. Cue placards carrying the slogan "banks got bailed out, we got sold out", and the arrival of food parcels from all over the country. It was a PR disaster for Bank of America and JP Morgan, and even president-elect Barack Obama lent his support.
Anyhow, after just under a week's sit-in a deal has been agreed whereby the workers will now receive the money they are due. Question is, would it work in Witney or East Road, London N1? Must surely beat feeling impotent at the injustice of it all.
