Jobsian inspiration

The amount of wordage generated by Steve Jobs' decision to step down as Apple CEO could probably reach to the moon and back.

Of the many extraordinary things about Jobs, and the you-couldn't-make-it-up impact he's had at Apple since returning to the near-bankrupt company in 1996, a couple of things stood out for me as food for thought in a wider business sense.

One was that if AN Company were headhunting for a new CEO, then a Jobs-like character wouldn't even make the list of candidates. College drop-out, no MBA or stint at Harvard or Insead. A micro-managing, semi-obsessive who's something of a "challenge" to work for... the list goes on. Who would recruit such a person, and be able to spot the genius therein? Something for executive boards to consider, perhaps, next time they're confronting an array of corporate suits.

The other was among the many Jobs-related pronouncements that have been published in the past week or so. This quote seemed to me to have particular relevance here in print, for both printers and suppliers to the industry. In 1999 he said of the struggling company: "The cure for Apple is not cost-cutting. The cure for Apple is to innovate its way out of its current predicament."

Easier said than done, of course. But as we all know what happened next, as an inspiring example of walking the talk it's hard to beat.
