Remember when long-perfecting sheetfed presses first hit the market, and the UK became something of a hotbed for installations of same? I’m wondering if something similar is happening in the world of book printing, and the adoption of digital printing in the shape of inkjet webs. The latest is Ashford Colour Press, which confirmed a £2m spend on HP T230 and Hunkeler kit at the Hunkeler Innovationdays. Ashford joins a growing band of book specialists taking this route, whether for mono or – increasingly – colour production. CPI was notable in committing to inkjet web early across its European operations and now has at least six, including its first colour device with the HP T350 “Quantum” line at CPI Antony Rowe here in the UK. We have Clays with its Timsons/Kodak inkjet line. And MPG also opting for the Timsons/Kodak route. Lightning Source has plans to add the Océ Colorstream to its UK facility this year. I’ve the usual dread feeling here, in compiling such a list, that I’ve inevitably missed someone terribly obvious off. But I feel fairly confident in saying that while Ashford wasn’t the first, it won’t be the last.
